The Central Church of Christ in Athens, Alabama, is searching for a full-time preaching minister.  This congregation has an attendance of 250-300 and is served by six elders and seven deacons.  The church has a full-time youth minister, part-time children’s ministry coordinator, and part-time secretary.  

Centrally located between Nashville and Birmingham, Athens is a growing community with an excellent school system. Salary and benefits are negotiable.  Benefits will include health and retirement allocations, moving expenses, merit raises, professional development, paid vacation, paid sick leave, and paid holidays.

Job Description

Job Title:    Minister  

Duties & Responsibilities  

I.  Pulpit Preaching

     The minister shall prepare and deliver sermons for the congregation’s Sunday morning and evening worship services each week.  

II.  Bible Class Teaching

            The minister shall teach a Sunday morning or Wednesday night Bible class each week.  

III.  Evangelism

            The minister shall be actively involved in the evangelistic efforts of the congregation.  Time shall be devoted each week to contacting and working with prospective converts.  

IV.  Congregational Development

      The minister shall be actively involved in the church family and in the community.  Time shall be devoted each week to contacting members who need encouragement and being available for spiritual counseling.  The minister is expected to conduct special services for members, such as weddings and funerals, when requested.  The minister shall represent the congregation in outreach efforts with the community.  

V.  Staff and Labor Supervision

      The minister shall serve as the immediate supervisor for the church secretary and the service labor personnel.  This responsibility includes the direction of the subordinates’ work activities and the evaluation of their performance.  This responsibility does not include hiring, disciplinary or termination of employment duties.  

VI.  Other Duties

            The minister shall carry out other duties as assigned by the supervising authority.  

Supervisory Controls  

The minister shall be supervised by the elders.  In the event of temporary operation without an eldership, the minister will be supervised by an Operations Committee appointed by the congregation.  

Educational Requirements  

It is preferred that the minister shall have earned a Bachelors degree from an accredited university program of study in Bible/theology.  

Skill Requirements  

The minister shall possess a thorough knowledge of the scriptures.  He shall have previous experience in preparing and delivering sermons using effective public speaking skills.  The minister shall have the ability to listen effectively and to communicate clearly, both orally and in written form.  He shall possess basic administrative and leadership skills.  

Responsibilities as a Member of the Congregation  

This job description does not address the voluntary responsibilities of the minister as a member of the congregation.  The minister is expected to participate to a reasonable degree in voluntary tasks or assignments, such as, opening the building, making announcements, delivering food boxes, etc., without direction or compensation.
